Universal Credit increase: a step forward, but challenges remain

1st April 2026

From today, the standard allowance for Universal Credit has increased from £92 to £98 per week.

While this rise is a positive step, and any increase is welcome, it still falls short of covering the true cost of essentials such as food, energy, toiletries, and transport.

At Hart Foodbank, we continue to see first-hand the impact of the ongoing cost-of-living pressures. Many people accessing our services are doing everything they can to manage, but are finding that their income simply isn’t stretching far enough to meet everyday needs.

Behind every statistic is a real person – individuals and families working hard to get by, often facing difficult choices between basic essentials.

Although changes like this are encouraging, the reality remains that many in our community still need support. That’s why we will continue to work alongside our partners and supporters to ensure help is available, while also advocating for a future where everyone can afford the essentials they need to live.

Need support?

If you or someone you know is struggling, please remember that help is available – reaching out early can make a real difference.
