Pride Month: recognising the unequal impact of hunger

10th June 2026

June is Pride Month, an important opportunity to celebrate diversity, inclusion, and community, while also recognising some of the challenges still faced by LGBTQIA+ people across the UK.

At Hart Foodbank, we believe everyone deserves access to the essentials they need to live with dignity. However, research continues to show that food insecurity does not affect all communities equally.

Recent findings revealed that in 2024, around one in three people in the LGBTQIA+ community experienced hunger or hardship, compared with 15% of people who are heterosexual. These figures highlight the disproportionate impact that financial insecurity and poverty can have on LGBTQIA+ individuals and families.

Behind these statistics are real people facing difficult circumstances. Many may experience additional barriers to accessing support, alongside the pressures of rising living costs, housing challenges, and financial uncertainty.

Foodbanks exist to provide practical support, but they are also places of welcome, respect, and community. At Hart Foodbank, we are committed to ensuring that everyone who comes through our doors is treated with kindness, dignity, and understanding.

Pride Month is about visibility, equality, and belonging. It is also a reminder of the importance of building communities where everyone feels safe, valued, and supported.

As part of the Trussell community, we are proud to be part of a network that works to support everyone facing hardship, regardless of their background, identity, or circumstances.

Together, we can continue working towards a future where everyone can afford the essentials and no one is forced to go hungry. 💚🏳️‍🌈
