Summer holidays: We’re here to help

20th July 2026

For many families, the summer holidays are a time to relax, enjoy the sunshine and create lasting memories. But when school closes for the summer, many parents face an unwelcome challenge – higher household costs.

With children at home throughout the holidays, food bills can rise quickly. Breakfasts, lunches, snacks and drinks all add to the weekly shopping bill, while the temporary loss of free school meals can place extra pressure on already stretched budgets. Add the cost of keeping children entertained, and it’s easy to see why summer can become a worrying time for many families.

You’re not alone

If you’re worried about how you’ll manage over the coming weeks, please remember that support is available.

At Hart Foodbank, we understand that anyone can experience difficult times. Whether you’re facing a temporary financial setback, waiting for benefits, coping with unexpected expenses or simply finding it harder to make ends meet, we’re here to help.

Through our referral partners, we can provide emergency food parcels and help connect you with organisations offering practical advice on money, benefits, debt, housing and other local support services.

Don’t wait until you’re in crisis

If you’re beginning to feel the pressure, we encourage you to seek help as early as possible.

Speaking to one of our referral agencies or contacting our Community Connector Team can help you access the support you need before your situation becomes more difficult. Reaching out early often opens the door to a wider range of advice and assistance.

Holiday activities for children

Many local authorities and community organisations also offer free or low-cost activities during the school holidays, helping children stay active, socialise and enjoy nutritious meals through the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme where eligible. Check with your local council to see what support is available in your area.

How you can help

Summer is often one of our busiest times, but it can also be a quieter period for donations as many people are away on holiday.

If you’re able to help, every donation makes a difference. Whether it’s a few items added to your supermarket shop, a financial contribution, or giving your time as a volunteer, your support helps us continue providing essential food and compassionate support to local people throughout the summer.

Together, we can ensure that no one in our community has to face the school holidays alone.
