💚 From donation to food parcel – what happens behind the scenes?

16th August 2026

Have you ever wondered what happens to the food you donate to Hart Foodbank?

Every tin, packet, jar and bag donated by our local community has an important part to play. But before it reaches someone who needs support, there is a team of dedicated volunteers working behind the scenes to make sure every donation is put to good use.

🛒 It starts with your donation

Food reaches Hart Foodbank in lots of different ways. Local people generously donate items at supermarket collection points, community events, schools, churches, businesses and directly to the Foodbank.

Whether it’s a single tin of beans or a large community collection, every donation matters.

For someone experiencing financial hardship, the items you donate can provide much-needed support at a difficult time.

📦 Sorting and checking

Once donations arrive, our volunteers get to work.

Food is carefully sorted into categories and checked to make sure it is suitable for distribution. Items are organised so that volunteers can easily find what is needed when food parcels are being prepared.

This might not be the most visible part of our work, but it is incredibly important. Good organisation helps us make the best possible use of every donation.

🥫 Building a food parcel

When someone is referred to Hart Foodbank, our volunteers select food to create a parcel designed to provide practical support.

The contents can vary depending on what has been donated and what is available at the time. Donations of everyday essentials such as tinned food, pasta, rice, cereals, sauces, toiletries and other long-life products all help us provide a balanced selection of items.

Our volunteers work hard to ensure that people receiving support are treated with dignity, kindness and respect.

🚚 Getting food where it is needed

Behind every food parcel is also a huge amount of practical work – moving donations, keeping shelves stocked, organising storage areas and transporting food between locations.

Our volunteers play a vital role in keeping everything moving, from the moment a donation arrives to the point where it is ready to be given to someone in need.

💚 Your donation really does make a difference

It’s easy to look at a tin of food in a supermarket collection basket and think it’s only a small contribution.

But that one item becomes part of something much bigger.

Your donation → our volunteers → a food parcel → support for a local person or family facing hardship.

And it’s not just food. Donations of money, time, equipment and professional skills can also help Hart Foodbank continue its work in the local community.

🙌 Thank you to our amazing community

None of this would be possible without the generosity of local people, businesses, schools, community groups, supermarkets and, of course, our wonderful volunteers.

Every time you put an extra item in a collection basket, organise a collection, volunteer your time or make a donation, you are helping us support someone in our local community when they need it most.

So next time you see a Hart Foodbank collection point, remember that your donation is just the beginning of a journey.

From your shopping basket, through the hands of our volunteers, and ultimately to someone who needs it – together, we can make a difference. 💚
