When there simply isn’t enough money

11th September 2026

People on the lowest incomes already know where every penny goes.

They know how much the rent costs. They know when the energy bill is due. They know what the weekly food shop costs and how much is needed for travel, school expenses and other essentials.

For people living on a very tight budget, careful budgeting isn’t a new idea – it’s something they often have to do every single day.

The problem isn’t always how money is being spent.

Sometimes, there simply isn’t enough money to cover life’s essentials in the first place.

Making impossible choices

When income doesn’t stretch far enough, people can be forced into impossible choices.

Do you pay the electricity bill or buy enough food for the week?

Do you top up the meter or replace a child’s shoes?

Do you pay for travel to work or make sure there is enough money for dinner?

These aren’t choices anyone should have to make.

Financial hardship can happen for many reasons. A change in circumstances, an unexpected bill, rising household costs or a reduction in income can quickly leave someone struggling to make ends meet.

And when there is no financial cushion, even a relatively small unexpected expense can have a significant impact.

Foodbank support is there for a reason

At Hart Foodbank, we know that people who come to us for support have often already done everything they can to make their money stretch further.

Asking for help isn’t a sign that someone has failed to budget or manage their money. It is often a sign that they have reached the point where there simply isn’t enough to cover the essentials.

Our role is to provide practical support during difficult times, while helping people access information, advice and wider support where appropriate.

We believe everyone should have enough money to afford the essentials they need to live with dignity.

A little help can make a big difference

For someone facing a week where the money just doesn’t add up, a food parcel can provide some breathing space.

It can mean one less impossible decision to make.

It can mean putting food on the table without having to choose between eating and paying another essential bill.

And it can remind someone that they are not alone.

Thank you to everyone who supports Hart Foodbank and helps us be there for local people when they need us most. 💚
