Halloween might be scary for one night, but poverty Is frightening all year round

30th October 2026

With Halloween just around the corner, pumpkins, ghosts and ghouls are appearing everywhere. But while Halloween is all about a little fright for fun, there are much more serious things that continue to frighten people in our communities every single day.

At Hart Foodbank and Community Pantry, we see how financial hardship can affect people’s lives. Behind every request for help is a person or family who may be facing difficult circumstances and worrying about how they will manage.

πŸŽƒ Unsafe and unaffordable housing

Everyone deserves a safe, secure place to call home. But when housing costs are too high, or accommodation is unsuitable or insecure, families can be left struggling to afford other essentials, including food.

πŸŽƒ A social security system that doesn’t support people when they need it most

When people face unexpected bills, a change in circumstances or an income that doesn’t cover essential costs, timely and adequate support can make all the difference. Without it, people can be pushed into crisis and forced to make impossible choices.

πŸŽƒ The fact that foodbanks still exist

Foodbanks provide essential emergency support to people who cannot afford enough food. But the need for foodbanks is a reminder that too many people are struggling to meet their most basic needs.

Let’s work towards a future without food poverty

Halloween might be scary for one night, but these challenges are frightening all year round.

Foodbanks will continue to provide vital support to people experiencing hardship. However, everyone deserves enough money to afford food, a safe home and the essentials of everyday life without having to turn to emergency food support.

This Halloween, let’s remember the people in our communities facing real-life fears – and keep working towards a future where nobody has to worry about where their next meal will come from.

Because the scariest thing of all is a world where people cannot afford the essentials. πŸ’š
