Worried about energy bills this winter? Seven ways to help keep costs down

4th November 2026

As the colder weather approaches, many households are beginning to worry about the cost of keeping their homes warm. With energy bills continuing to put pressure on family budgets, people can find themselves facing difficult choices between heating their home, buying food and paying other essential bills.

At Hart Foodbank, we know how stressful these financial pressures can be. That’s why we’re sharing seven practical tips from Christians Against Poverty (CAP) to help you manage energy use, stay warm and find support if you’re struggling.

Seven ways to help manage your energy costs

1. Check your meter readings

Make sure your energy meter readings are accurate so you’re only being charged for the energy you actually use. For advice on checking your meter, visit Citizens Advice.

2. Heat the areas you use

Where safe and suitable, consider using a hot water bottle, an electric throw or heating just the room you’re spending time in. This may help reduce overall heating demand. Always follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions when using electrical heating products.

3. Make small changes to reduce energy use

Simple everyday changes can help avoid unnecessary energy use. Try washing clothes at 30°C, taking shorter showers and switching off electrical devices when they’re not needed.

4. Find a free Warm Welcome Hub

Warm Welcome Hubs offer free, welcoming indoor community spaces where you can spend time somewhere warm without using as much energy at home. They can also be a great opportunity to meet others and enjoy some company.

Find a local hub at Warm Welcome.

5. Check whether your home could be more energy efficient

Good insulation can help keep heat inside your home and reduce energy waste. There may also be grants or schemes available to help with improvements such as loft insulation.

6. Speak to your energy supplier

If you’re worried about paying your energy bills, contact your supplier as soon as possible. Explain your circumstances and ask what support, payment options or advice they may be able to offer.

7. Get free debt advice if you need it

If you’re behind on energy payments or struggling with other debts, free, impartial advice can help you understand your options.

Please don’t be afraid to ask for help. You are not alone, and getting advice and support early can make a real difference.
