Reducing food waste together

2nd July 2026

Every year, thousands of tonnes of perfectly good food are thrown away across the UK, despite being safe and nutritious to eat. At the same time, many individuals and families are finding it increasingly difficult to afford everyday essentials.

By working together with local supermarkets, food retailers and businesses, and community organisations, we can help bridge this gap. Surplus food that might otherwise go to waste is collected and redistributed, ensuring it reaches people who can make good use of it rather than ending up in landfill.

Food donations can include fresh fruit and vegetables, bread, dairy products, chilled items and cupboard staples. While many people think foodbanks only distribute tins and long-life products, surplus food allows a wider variety of nutritious items to be shared whenever they are available.

Redistributing surplus food doesn’t just support people experiencing financial hardship – it also benefits the environment. Reducing food waste helps lower carbon emissions, conserves the resources used to produce food and reduces the amount of waste sent to landfill.

We’re incredibly grateful to the local businesses that support this work by donating surplus food instead of throwing it away. Their generosity helps ensure that good food is put to good use while making a positive difference to our community.

Everyone can play a part in reducing food waste. Planning meals, using leftovers creatively, freezing food before it spoils and donating unopened, in-date items to your local food bank are all simple ways to make a difference.

Together, we can help create a community where less food is wasted, more people are supported, and valuable resources are used wisely.
