Today, 21 August, is National Senior Citizens Day – an opportunity to celebrate older people in our communities and recognise the valuable contribution they make to family and community life.
It is also a chance to highlight the challenges that some older people can face, particularly when household budgets are under pressure.
When making ends meet becomes difficult
For some older people, rising household costs can make it increasingly difficult to afford all the essentials. Food, energy bills, housing costs and other everyday expenses can quickly add up, particularly for people living on a fixed or limited income.
An unexpected bill or change in circumstances can make an already tight budget even harder to manage.
No one should have to choose between heating their home, paying a bill or putting food on the table.
Food insecurity can affect older people too
There can sometimes be an assumption that foodbank users are mainly families with children. In reality, people of all ages and backgrounds can experience financial hardship.
Older people may face particular pressures, including living on a fixed income, increased household costs or having to manage unexpected expenses.
For someone who has carefully budgeted from one week to the next, even a small increase in essential costs can make a significant difference.
💚 We are here to help
If an older person is struggling to afford food, support is available.
We work with local referral agencies to provide emergency food support to people experiencing financial hardship. We also work alongside other organisations that can provide advice, guidance and practical support.
Asking for help is nothing to be ashamed of. Financial difficulty can happen to anyone, and reaching out for support can be an important first step.
Let’s look out for one another
National Senior Citizens Day is also a good opportunity to think about the older people in our own communities.
Perhaps check in with an older neighbour, friend or family member. A phone call, a cup of tea, help with shopping or simply asking “Are you okay?” can mean a great deal.
And if you know someone who may be struggling financially, make sure they know that help is available.
Today, we celebrate older people and the contribution they make to our communities. Let’s also make sure that everyone has access to the support they need to live with dignity and security. 💚
