Back to school: helping families face the cost of a new school year

As the summer holidays come to an end and children prepare to head back to school, many families will be thinking about the costs that come with a new school year – from uniforms and shoes to PE kits, stationery, travel and packed lunches.

For families already struggling to make ends meet, these extra costs can put even more pressure on household budgets. With children growing quickly, replacing outgrown clothes and shoes can be particularly difficult when there is little money left after paying for essentials such as rent, energy and food.

The Government’s updated school uniform guidance, which applies in England, recognises that uniform costs should not be a barrier to children attending school. From September 2026, schools are also limited in the number of branded uniform items they can require families to buy, while schools should make second-hand uniform available and provide information about how families can access it.

Starting a new school year can be an expensive time, particularly for families with more than one child. Even when parents and carers shop carefully, the cost of replacing several essential items can quickly add up.
