Grant supports better dental health for families in Hart

15th March 2026

Our Community Pantry has successfully secured a new grant to support a toothbrushing initiative aimed at improving dental health for local families.

The funding forms part of a wider campaign led by Hampshire County Council and its Public Health team, working in partnership with the Household Support Fund to promote better oral health across Hampshire.

Through this initiative, the Community Pantry will provide families with toothbrushing packs containing a toothbrush, fluoride toothpaste and simple guidance on good brushing habits. These packs will help families who may otherwise struggle to access essential oral health products.

Tackling a preventable health issue

Poor oral health remains a significant but preventable issue for many children. National data shows that tooth decay is the leading cause of hospital admission for children aged 5–9, with children in the most deprived communities 3.5 times more likely to require tooth extractions than those in more affluent areas.

Research also shows that around one third of five-year-olds in the most deprived areas have experienced tooth decay, often leading to pain, missed school days, and avoidable NHS treatment.

Providing access to toothbrushes and fluoride toothpaste, alongside simple guidance, can make a real difference. Public health experts highlight that early access to oral health products helps reduce health inequalities and supports better long-term outcomes for children and families.

Practical support through community food services

For many families experiencing financial pressures, the cost of everyday essentials – including basic dental care products – can be difficult to manage. Community food organisations such as Hart Community Pantry are well placed to help bridge this gap by offering practical support alongside food provision.

The grant will enable the Pantry to:

  • Purchase and distribute toothbrushing packs to families

  • Share clear, accessible advice on establishing healthy brushing routines

  • Integrate oral health support into the Pantry’s wider food and wellbeing services

By working together with local partners, the initiative aims to support healthier habits and improve access to essential health products for families across the Hart area.
