Mental health awareness week: more than food

11th May 2026

This week marks Mental Health Awareness Week, an important opportunity to recognise the connection between financial hardship and mental wellbeing.

At Hart Foodbank, we know that food banks are about so much more than food. They are places of kindness, connection, and hope – somewhere people can feel welcomed, supported, and listened to without judgement.

For many people, reaching out for help can feel overwhelming. Worrying about money, food, housing, and everyday essentials can place huge pressure on mental health, especially during ongoing cost-of-living challenges. Feelings of stress, anxiety, and isolation are something many people in our community are experiencing every day.

That’s why creating a warm and supportive environment matters so much.

Often, support begins with something simple – a friendly conversation, a cup of tea, and the reassurance that someone is there to listen. For some, it may be the first time in a long while they have felt truly heard.

Alongside emergency food support, we also work to connect people with wider help and services, recognising that improving wellbeing often means addressing the wider challenges people are facing.

During Mental Health Awareness Week, we want to remind anyone who may be struggling that they are not alone. Support is available, and reaching out is a sign of strength 💚
