Debt, Poverty and Hope: Why support matters more than ever

17th June 2026

New figures from debt charity CAP (Christians Against Poverty) highlight the growing financial pressures facing many households across the UK, and the increasing challenges people face in overcoming debt and hardship.

CAP’s latest research shows that unmanageable debt is becoming more difficult to repay as the cost of essentials continues to rise. Average priority debts, including rent, council tax, and energy bills, have increased significantly over the past decade, leaving many people struggling to find a way forward.

The charity reports that fewer than a quarter of the people it supports now have the resources needed to repay their debts within a reasonable timeframe. This paints a worrying picture of the financial pressures affecting communities nationwide.

The impact goes beyond finances

Debt doesn’t just affect bank balances. It can have a profound impact on people’s physical and mental wellbeing.

Many people facing financial hardship are also dealing with anxiety, stress, isolation, and uncertainty about the future. Worries about paying bills, keeping a roof over their head, or putting food on the table can take a significant toll on mental health.

At Hart Foodbank, we regularly meet people who are doing everything they can to manage their finances, yet still find themselves struggling due to circumstances beyond their control.

Practical support makes a difference

While the challenges are significant, there is support available.

Local churches and community organisations continue to play a vital role in helping people facing hardship. Through partnerships with organisations such as CAP, practical help is available for those struggling with debt, budgeting, employment challenges, and financial insecurity.

Alongside providing emergency food and essentials, Hart Foodbank works closely with partner organisations to help people access the wider support they may need to improve their circumstances and regain stability.

Working towards a future without poverty

Everyone should be able to afford the essentials needed for a healthy and dignified life.

As financial pressures continue to affect many households, we remain committed to supporting local people, raising awareness of the issues driving poverty, and helping connect individuals with the advice and services that can make a lasting difference.

Together, through compassion, practical support, and community action, we can help ensure that no one faces hardship alone. 💚

Need help?

If you’re worried about debt or financial pressures, support is available. Speaking to an adviser early can often help prevent problems from becoming more difficult to manage and provide a pathway towards a more secure future.
