As the colder months approach and energy bills continue to put pressure on household budgets, many people are facing difficult choices between heating their homes, buying food and paying other essential bills.
For people already struggling financially, rising energy costs can make an already challenging situation even harder. Christians Against Poverty (CAP) is sharing seven practical tips to help people manage their energy use, stay warm and find support if they are struggling.
At Hart Foodbank, we understand how rising living costs can affect individuals and families. If you are worried about paying your bills, you are not alone, and help is available.
Seven tips to help with energy costs
1. Check your meter readings
Make sure your energy meter readings are accurate so you are only being charged for the energy you use. Visit Citizens Advice for guidance on checking your meter.
2. Use targeted heating
Where it is safe and suitable, using a hot water bottle, an electric throw or heating just the room you are using may help reduce overall heating demand. Always follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions when using electrical heating products.
3. Make small changes to reduce energy use
Simple steps, such as washing clothes at 30°C, taking shorter showers and switching off devices when they are not needed, may help reduce unnecessary energy use.
4. Find a free Warm Welcome Hub
Free indoor community spaces can offer somewhere warm to spend time without using as much energy at home. They can also provide opportunities to connect with others. Visit Warm Welcome to look for a hub near you.
5. Check whether your home could be more energy efficient
Insulation can help keep heat inside your home. Visit MoneySavingExpert for information about energy grants and possible free loft insulation schemes.
6. Contact your energy supplier if you are struggling
If you are worried about paying your energy bills, contact your supplier as soon as possible. Explain your circumstances and ask what support, payment options or advice may be available.
7. Get free debt advice if you need it
If you have fallen behind on energy bills or are struggling with other debts, free debt advice can help you understand your options. Visit MoneyHelper or contact Christians Against Poverty’s free helpline on 0800 328 0006 for impartial debt help.
You don’t have to face financial worries alone
We know that managing household bills can be stressful, particularly when there simply isn’t enough money to cover all the essentials.
At Hart Foodbank, we are here to support local people experiencing financial hardship. If you are struggling to afford food or other essentials, please reach out for help.
Asking for support is nothing to be ashamed of. Getting the right advice early may help you access support and prevent financial difficulties from becoming even harder to manage. 💚
