Hunger in the UK: It’s about more than budgeting

22nd May 2026

When people talk about hunger and poverty, there’s often a misconception that it’s simply about budgeting better. But for many people facing hardship across the UK, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

People on the lowest incomes already know exactly where every penny goes. They carefully manage bills, food shopping, travel, and essentials every day.

The reality is that there simply aren’t enough pennies in the first place.

At Hart Foodbank, we see firsthand how rising living costs, insecure work, low incomes, and gaps in support are leaving people unable to afford even the basics.

Foodbanks are often thought of as places that simply provide food. But the reality is that they offer so much more.

Alongside emergency food and toiletries, foodbanks are also places where people can:

  • Access support with housing and finances
  • Receive guidance around benefits and social security
  • Find help with mental health and wellbeing
  • Sit down for a cup of tea and a listening ear
  • Feel welcomed, supported, and less alone

For many people, the emotional support and human connection can be just as important as the food itself.

Behind every parcel is a real person doing their best to get by.

That’s why we continue working not only to meet immediate needs, but also towards a future where everyone can afford the essentials and no one needs a food bank 💚
