How can we build a future where everyone can afford the essentials and no one needs to turn to a foodbank?
This is the question at the heart of A Taste for Change: How to Build a Food Bank Free Future, a new book by Heather Buckingham, Social Change Advisor at Trussell, published on 29 September 2026.
The book explores why people experience financial hardship and what needs to change to ensure everyone has enough money to afford the essentials. It considers issues including rising living costs, employment, social security and the links between poverty and physical and mental health.
The message is clear: ending the need for foodbanks requires action from all parts of society.
The book highlights the important role of government in strengthening the social security system so that people have more reliable protection against financial hardship. It also explores how employers can help by providing fair pay, predictable working hours and flexible working arrangements.
Communities, charities, faith groups and local organisations also have an important role to play. By offering welcoming places where people feel valued, helping to reduce isolation and connecting people with advice and specialist support, they can help prevent people from reaching crisis point.
At Hart Foodbank, we understand how important emergency food and practical support are for people experiencing difficult times. While we continue to support local people who need us, we also share the ambition of a future where everyone can afford life’s essentials without needing to rely on a foodbank.
Creating that future will take a collective effort, with governments, businesses, communities, charities and individuals all playing their part.
